Facebook’s Mobile Users Exceed Desktop
Facebook have announced, in its fourth-quarter earnings report that, for the first time, more people are logging into Facebook daily on mobile than on desktop. Mobile usage of the platform has grown 57% since last year with more than 680 million users logging in using their mobile devices each month.
Facebook’s Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated on numerous occasions throughout last year that the social network is becoming a mobile company. Efforts to monetise this ever growing mobile user base began last year in June when Facebook launched their first mobile-only ad product with the release of mobile sponsored stories and later in August with the app install ad unit. This move has paid off with the revenue from these products growing quickly. This quarter, new mobile advertising products accounted for 23% of Facebook’s overall ad revenue, up from 14% last quarter.
The report also included an update on overall user numbers showing that current Facebook users stands at 1.06 billion, an increase of 25% year-on-year with daily active users increasing 28% to 618 million.
